An anti-spiking drink cover (also called a drink spiking cover or anti-spike cup cover) is a food-grade silicone cover that fits over a glass or cup to stop drugs or medication being slipped into it without you knowing. GHB is not the only "date rape drug": according to the ANSM, MDMA has been the main substance used in drink spiking for the 4th year running, and sedative medicines account for almost 60% of the substances reported (2024 data). Drink spiking means giving someone a substance (a drug or medication) without their knowledge that impairs their judgement, in order to commit sexual assault, rape, theft or other violence.

In France, the ANSM recorded 1,377 suspected cases in 2024, up 30.4% on 2023. Most of these assaults happen in a party or nightlife setting (56.5% of documented cases) and, among adults, an alcoholic drink is the main suspected vehicle (44.8%). Under Article 222-30-1 of the French Criminal Code, administering a substance to someone without their knowledge in order to commit rape or sexual assault is punishable by 5 years' imprisonment and a €75,000 fine (7 years and €100,000 if the victim is under 15 or particularly vulnerable). • Get to safety with someone you trust and tell the venue staff or security.

A drink spiking test kit, such as the CYD (Check Your Drink) test, is a reactive strip that changes colour on contact with certain substances used in drink spiking.

How to use it: take out a strip, put a drop of the suspect drink on both test areas, then watch the colour for 10 to 30 seconds. If it turns grey, blue or orange, a suspect substance is probably present: do not drink it and alert the staff.

A substance at a very low concentration can go undetected, and some drinks (acidic, milky or dark red) can make the result harder to read.
